Black And Blue All Over! - Pastels by ArtBYbeverly Black And Blue All Over! - Pastels by ArtBYbeverly
I finished this little guy this morning after breakfast. This is my first ever frog, done in hard and soft pastels! I really enjoyed the process and love how the leaf he's sitting on turned out! Unfortunately the camera shot this background a bit darker than it actually is in real life!! Please be kind with comments :) :)

I meant to add in my comment. I like how you used the slight touch of the background colors underneath the frog. It really is a nice touch to harmonizing the color scheme. :)

Thank you Lynn, its not actually this dark in real life...but for some reason and maybe it was the lighting in my art room, that caused the background to come out darker...oh well! lol

Your welcome hun, It's beautifully done and your pastel skills shine in it regardless of the slight color variance from the original

Bev, I have featured black and Blue all over in the group's gallery. When you refer to hard pastels are you using conte sticks?
Your detail in this is really amazing. You have really mastered control of this medium in your work.

Wow Lynn, thank you! No, I still pastel, but they are harder sticks that you use for laying down large areas, or pastel washes or minor details...they blend really nice and then I use soft pastel to finish off :)

Bev, what brand are the hard pastels you use? All of the stick pastels I have are soft. I've been using conte sticks for the more detailed areas or finer line. How do you do a pastel wash?:)

I use Prismacolor Premium - NuPastel sticks (hard) :) YOUTUBE link - [link]

I use Great American Art Works and Sennelier pastels (soft) - link [link]

A pastel wash...I apply hard pastel colors down on my surface (not good for just paper, because it will buckle) and then I take a soft brush and add water to it, and it creates a wash effect. It dries smooth and lighter than when wet, and you don't see any brush stroke marks :)

Hi hun, thank you so much for the links and letting me know what brands you use. what do you use in place of paper when you do the ones you use washes in?:)

No problem hun :huggle:

I use a Art Spectrum Colorfix sanded surface...it feels like a heavy construction paper (best way to describe it) and its sanded, in many colors too.

You can buy them in sheets, or blocks :)
